Scarf on the hip project: an intervention with women who have suffered intimate partner violence

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze a psychosocial intervention using group discussions and belly dance classes with women who were victims of intimate partner violence. Called the Lenço no Quadril Project ("Scarf on the Hips Project"), the intervention program was implemented in a shelter in southern Brazil and involved the participation of seven women. Structured into eight sessions, each lasting approximately two hours, the program was completed within one month. The group dynamics consisted of talking circles and belly dance classes specifically designed for women who had experienced abuse. To assess the results, semi-structured interviews were conducted after the intervention. In the end, it was found that the intervention program contributed to: (1) the formation of a support network among the participants; (2) the sharing and reflection on the violence experienced; (3) women’s empowerment, with positive effects on self-esteem, self-image, and self-efficacy in the face of victimization; and (4) the recontextualization of their relationship with their bodies. It was observed that belly dance, when combined with the verbalization of traumatic events and critical reflections on gender issues, can be an important tool in promoting health and well-being, as well as in the recovery and reconstruction of self-concept among victims of intimate partner violence. Further research is recommended to deepen the understanding of the psychological impact of belly dance techniques, as well as their medium- and long-term effects.
