Abstract

The phenomenon of parental alienation (PA) usually occurs in litigation processes involving parents and their children, in legal and clinical contexts. The study sought to identify the behavioral and psychological characteristics of parents with alienating behavior from an empirical sample. Fourteen (14) studies were selected from databases such as Google Scholar, CAPES Journals, PubMed, ResearchGate and Scielo. Twelve studies obtained retrospective data (adults responding about their experiences in childhood and adolescence), one study of secondary data (data obtained through professionals such as judges, experts, psychologists and social workers, working in processes involving PA) and one with primary data (direct interviews with parents during the custody dispute). Results showed that alienating parents exhibit behaviors such as defaming the target parent, limiting contact, manipulating and showing aggression. They also presented narcissistic, paranoid and antisocial personality traits. There was a lack of studies that assessed the personality traits of the alienators analyzed. This review contributes to a better understanding of alienating parents, as well as assisting technicians, experts, psychologists and judges in the appropriate assessment and intervention for cases involving parental alienation.
