In Brazil, the adoption of children/adolescents is a right granted to homoaffective and heteroaffective couples, however, difficulties and social stigmas. This article aimed to analyze the similarities and differences between homoaffective and heteroaffective adopting couples regarding the following points: 1) motivations for adoption; 2) facilitating and hindering aspects of adoption; 3) the couple's routine before and after adoption; 4) relationship of the couple and children with the school; and 5) same-sex couples and prejudice. The qualitative method was used with the assumption that parenting practices were similar for both groups. 64 fathers and mothers were interviewed, divided into two groups: 1. Homoaffective – 38 people, 19 couples (nine lesbians and ten gays), 2. Heteroaffective – 26 people, 13 couples. The comparison between the two groups showed similarities in relation to motivations, difficulties in obtaining new birth records and lack of psychological follow-up by the judiciary. In both groups, parenting is exercised through dialogue and sharing household and school tasks. The distances refer to homoaffective couples: slowness and prejudice during the process of adoption and insertion/adaptation of children in school and lack of adequate calendars to celebrate Father's/Mother's Day. Greater obstacles are faced by homoaffective couples, thus, the need for changes in the judicial system is highlighted to allow the guarantee of comprehensive assistance, seeking to legitimize dignity and citizenship.
